“Peace is an ongoing process, not a definitive achievement”, stated Mr. Aristide Nononsi, Independent Expert on the Situation of Human Rights in the Central African Republic, during the item 10 interactive dialogue of the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council, on 1 October 2026.
When presenting its report on the human rights situation in the Central African Republic between October 2025 and June 2026 (A/HRC/63/81), he gave an overview of the human rights situation in the context of the new electoral cycle, ongoing peacebuilding efforts and the gradual strengthening of State institutions. He exposed the ongoing challenges related to insecurity, human rights violations and the humanitarian situation. The Independent Expert emphasized that the new government of the Central African Republic has made efforts to promote peace, strengthen institutions, and protect civic space; however, these efforts must be supported by the international community to truly achieve lasting peace.
Several major challenges remain. The fight against impunity, widespread violence, insecurity along the borders, arms trafficking, and arbitrary arrests and detentions are all issues the State must address. It was highlighted that civilians, and particularly women and children, are disproportionately affected by human rights violations.
