Joint Oral Statement by EAFORD and GICJ

Delivered by Shyla Gheek /GICJ

Thank you, Mr. President.

We sit here today to express our deep concern and condemn the in-discriminated attacks on civilian populations, critical infrastructure, and protected natural resource facilities in the Middle East. The continued disregard of international law, and international humanitarian and human rights law pose a grave threat not only to regional stability but to international peace and security.

The entire region of the Middle East has fallen into a state of chaos, the tremors of which are expanding throughout the world. But the world must remember, these developments did not emerge in isolation as they are part of a longer trajectory of conflict, political fragmentation and imperialistic motivations of the main parties involved: Isreal, Iran and the United States.

Beyond the ongoing situation in the State of Palestine, this month marks twenty-three years since the invasion of Iraq, an event that destabilized the political and security landscape of the Middle East. Since then, the entire region, its people and resources have fallen victim to a power vacuum, enabling Iran to expand its domination across countries such as Syria, Lebanon and Yemen. The reality is that the region is paying the price of years of reckless decisions, foreign interference, and the systematic weakening of state institutions.

The continued targeting of infrastructure, the spread of violence across borders, and the normalization of instability is not sustainable.

On behalf of EAFORD and Geneva International Centre for Justice, we call for maximum restraint, respect for international law, protection of civilians and facilities and overall cessation of hostilities.

Thank you
