Item 6: Universal Periodic Review Outcome – The Maldives
23 March 2026
Joint Statement Association Ma’onah for Human Rights and Immigration and Geneva International Centre for Justice
Thank you, Vice President.
We thank the Maldives for its commitment to the Universal Periodic Review process and welcome its constructive engagement with the international community. As a State Party to international human rights treaty instruments, the Maldives recognises its obligations to protect and promote human rights. It has undertaken concerted efforts to strengthen the autonomy of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives. We commend the implementation of legislative and institutional reforms, including a zero-tolerance policy on corruption, the constitutional recognition of the right to education and enhanced accountability measures for law enforcement agencies.
Association Ma’onah and Geneva International Centre for Justice strongly encourage the Maldives to continue its efforts to protect and promote human rights in the country. We further urge the Government to consider ratifying the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. In order to consolidate institutional capacities, the Maldives is encouraged to take measures ensuring that national human rights institutions operate in full compliance with the Paris Principles.
Climate-change and disaster preparedness remain major areas of concern for the Maldives. We take note of the need to integrate climate-resilience and disaster risk reduction strategies into the national development plan. A commitment to sustainable development is crucial for the full and effective realisation of civil, political, economic and cultural rights. In conclusion, we urge the Maldives to consider adopting the recommendations issued during the review process to strengthen human rights frameworks, promote environmental protection and continue safeguarding the dignity and wellbeing of its people.
Thank you.
