The 23rd of December marks five years since the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2334 calling for an end to all settlement activities in Palestinian territories. This resolution states that the expansion of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories menaces a two-State solution and that the continued occupation and relations between Israel and Palestine must be governed by international law.

UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in Palestine Michael Lynk has called upon the international community to enforce the Resolution. Lynk states that the Israeli political leadership has no interest nor incentive to end the current occupation, each of the 20 Security Council reports since the Resolution have shown non-compliance by Israel to the directions of the Security Council.

The reluctance of the international community to bring Israel’s actions to account has resulted in a 12% increase in Israeli settlers in Palestinian territories since Resolution 2334 was adopted. Lynk states that the international community should apply a rights-based approach to peace-making by holding Israel accountable and compliant with international law.

Geneva International Centre for Justice (GICJ) supports Resolution 2334 and calls for the international community to hold Israel to account for their breaches of international law.
