On the 17th of February 2017, the Geneva International Centre for Justice (GICJ) sent a letter to Mr. Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in light of recent cases of violent closure of democratic space in Iraq.
Al-Hawija one year after the massacre: Only justice can give satisfaction to the victims - 23 April 2014
April 23, 2014 marks the first anniversary of the al-Hawija massacre in Iraq, when at about 5 in the morning a peaceful sit-in came under an attack by government troops that left scores dead and injured and hundreds arrested. One year later justice for the victims has still not been found and human rights violations continue to take place on an even accelerated scale.

Following the urgent appeals sent on 23 April and 26 April 2013 regarding the massacre of Al-Hawija, and based on new information received by Geneva International Centre for Justice from local sources confirming that people were executed by Iraqi forces following the storming of the sit-in, a Letter of Allegation has been submitted to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions.

In view of new developments which were brought to its attention by reliable sources, GICJ sent a follow-up appeal to its communication dated 23 April 2013, in which it denounced the armed forces execution of arrested demonstrators, and warns of the high possibility of new massacres if swift and effective action is not taken.

Urgent Appeal on the massacre of Iraqi demonstrators in Hawija - 23 April 2013
In wake of the attack and killing of demonstrators in Al-Hawija, Geneva International Centre for Justice has sent an urgent appeal to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions and the Special Rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly requesting that immediate action be taken with regards to these new grave human rights violations perpetrated by the government of Nouri Al-Maliki.
Iraqi PM declarations on the ongoing demonstrations in Iraq - 21 January 2013
In this interview with Al-Jazeera Satellite Channel, the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki sends a direct and very clear threat to the Iraqi people demonstrating for the restoration of their human rights. nGeneva International Centre for Justice sent a communication to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and to relevant Special Procedures mandate-holders about these declarations made by the highest political authority of Iraq. GICJ considers that it constitutes a clear violation of the right of the Iraqi people to demonstrate peacefully and associate freely.
The Iraqi army uses lethal weapons against peaceful Iraqi demonstrators - 21 January 2013
This short video, taken on on Friday 4 January 2013 in the streets of Mossul, shows the Iraqi army pursuing Iraqi demonstrators and opening fire on them. GICJ has sent a communication to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and to relevant UN Special Procedures requesting them to take all necessary measures, in accordance with their mandates, to remind the Iraqi authorities of their duty to protect and guarantee the rights of the Iraqi people to demonstrate peacefully and associate freely.

The Iraqi authorities resort to threats and use of violence against demonstrators asking for the restoration of their human rights. GICJ considers that these peaceful protests, which are taking place on a daily basis across the whole country, constitute a legal exercise of the right to peaceful protests by the Iraqi people.
